Introduction

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is situated along the Biscay Bay in Bilbao, which is the fourth largest city in the northern region of Spain. Once a city that is known as a formidable player in manufacturing, shipping and commerce in the country, the city of Bilbao is now slowly transforming itself to become one of the top cultural capitals in Spain. The building of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a prime example for this move of the city. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao building's design was the creation of North American artist Frank Gehry. The combination of limestone, glass and titanium used in the construction of the building has made it considered by architect Philip Johnson to be "the greatest building of our time."

Ever since the doors of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao opened to the general public back in October 1997, the museum has become one of the top tourist destinations in the city of Bilbao. The collection of artworks housed inside the museum are just as spectacular as the building itself. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is home to hundreds of some of the finest artworks created by the most notable artists of the 20th century.

Visitors and locals alike can avail of guided tours facilitated by qualified and highly trained guides on certain times of the days. Apart from specialized tours for adults and families for them to gain a newfound sense of appreciation of the arts, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao also offers guided sign language tours to facilitate visitors that have a problem speaking and hearing.
